O'Grady's parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor and Jan O'Grady. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. Before shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. Her career started as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring part on the ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
